Upon approval, the military will pay the service member the OHA maximum amount for the correct amount of rent. Under this overseas system, service members can't keep the difference if their rent is less than their OHA, so it's important to review your finances if you're paying a little extra each month while you're stateside.

How to sign up for lists and other procedures Generally, military members stationed in the continental United States (CONUS) are authorized to live in official housing based on certain factors such as pay grade and availability.
In some places, civilians and members of the public can rent houses inside military quarters. This occurs when a local base housing company cannot find enough qualified service members or families to live in base housing.
At that point they can fill those spaces with "other qualified tenants" such as civilians. Many military bases have temporary housing facilities (also known as TLFs) that are used to provide accommodation for those arriving on base under TDY orders and those transferring during permanent change of station orders.

. Not every base has a TLF, and not every base with a TLF has the capacity to accommodate every visitor. You have to pay for rent, utilities, and even things Americans never have to worry about.
For example, if you live in the UK (for example at a base such as RAF Feltwell) you may have to pay tax on your television. If you're a DoD civilian working on base, this can be a great deal -- cutting down on your commute time and allowing you to be close to people with similar interests.
If you're retired, this makes basic shopping and visits to medical facilities much easier, but remember that your neighbors will be much younger than you. …you have multiple quotes about weeds in the garden. Oops if you get too much, you might get evicted, but you'll always call and explain that you have a black thumb and hate gardening.
You're told, "That's great, but put your weed in." There is also a basic accommodation option in most areas. The government pays up to a certain amount for your home, giving you the freedom and flexibility to find the home and location you want - but it can come with some extra headaches.
Who Is Eligible To Live On Base?
Although most of the privatized housing is out of the gate, some of it is actually on the grounds. If you live in gated housing, you will receive a basic access card for the duration of your tenancy.
It will get you through the gates but will not give you access to commissaries, exchanges or other facilities that require a military ID card. Although the weather fluctuates throughout the year, the region does not observe four distinct seasons.
Although it can get chilly in winter, it's never too cold to go outside - buy a swimsuit for a jacket that day. Southern California's climate is mild year-round, but you'll find that geography greatly affects temperatures.

Winds and the ocean floor keep the water cool and the mountains and deserts warm. You will also find that the temperature in the desert can fluctuate up to 30 degrees per day. It can start from 45 degrees in the morning and go up to 75 degrees in the afternoon.

It's up to you to use that money to pay your rent and any utilities you have left. If you decide to live on base, the accommodation will either be government-owned or privatized. Although it is owned by the government, the Department of Defense owns and manages the property.
Instead of receiving Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), the service member will not pay rent. Single or unaccompanied service members may choose to live in barracks, which are rent-free but may require shared rooms or bathrooms.
Some branches require only service members below a certain rank to live in barracks. Living on base immerses you in the Army community and gives you easy access to work and all available amenities. You'll have little say in the type of home, but you'll have everything you need to feel right at home.
Being grounded can give you more separation between your work and personal life and more options when choosing a home or neighborhood. You may have to travel to work, but you will have access to basically all the amenities, facilities, and programs offered.
